Centenary Challenge Day Saturday 15th May 2010
Over 400 girls from all 5 districts of Girlguiding Stevenage Division enjoyed a day of fun and celebration on Saturday. Girlguiding UK is 100 this year
and the event was held to mark the occasion. Members aged 5 to 90+ came together at Wymondley Wood Scout and Guide Centre to take part in a host of activities
including giant bubble blowing, parachute games, face painting and camping. There were some more retro activities, keeping in mind the theme of the event,
including maypole dancing and space hopper races. Girls learnt sign language with the help of the Phoenix Group for Deaf Children and all about a day in the
life of a police officer courtesy of Crucial Crew.
The girls were able to visit a centenary display of local Guiding history and talk to members of the Trefoil Guild about their experiences of early Guiding in
the area. There was a Big Brother style diary room for members of all ages to record their Guiding memories and a representative from Stevenage Museum was on hand
to make audio recordings which will be used in a forthcoming display about Girlguiding at the museum next month. There was also a graffiti wall for girls to write what they thought on Guiding is Great...click here to see some images.
Stevenage Mayor, Sue Myson visited the event stating, "This is lovely. I think Guiding is excellent. What you offer these girls is amazing."
Members made a donation of £400 to Enhance Herts which will go towards improvements at Lister Hospital's Bluebell Ward for children. Division Commissioner Tina Honeysett
said, "It's been a fantastic day for me as the new Division Commissioner to see so many girls and their leaders all together, having fun whilst keeping in mind an important
part of Guiding and helping other people."
