North District Newsletter September 2010
Over 20 Rainbows and 5 Brownies attended a 2 hour orienteering on a very warm July evening at Fairlands park, particular highlights were the play-park and a scavenger hunt!
The 15th Guides have had a sporty term thanks to the livewire project with trampolining, tennis, swimming, raft building and games sessions and are enjoyed the County camp, 'Hit The Heights' at Paccar Scout Camp.
The 5th Rainbows have had a very busy term celebration 100 years of Girlguiding. They have completed the Hertfordshire walking badge by walking to see the daffodils the girls planted, a walk round Church Farm (Ardley) and a walk from Sainsbury’s to their meeting place. All the girls can now pack a rucksack and find their house on a map of Stevenage! Many girls also visited Stevenage museum to see the Girlguiding centenary display.
The 4th Brownies ended their term with a visit to the climbing wall at Fairlands and will return in September for Bell boating. They have also completed the Hertforshire Walking Challenge by packing rucksacks, walking to St Nicolas Church and using maps and compasses.
Phoenix Rangers have been busy training for the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze expedition including going on hikes in order to improve navigation skills and teamwork and learning to plan healthy expedition meals and cook on trangias, also first aid training and emergency procedures, route planning and campcraft. The Rangers also did bag packing in Tesco and Sainsburys to raise funds to purchase the DofE equipment. They attended Gig in a Field, travelling there by train taking their DofE kit bags, which was a new experience in itself! At Gig in a Field all had a great time in wonderful sunshine, playing the drums, learning circus skills, some walked on water (hydosphearing) and of course there was a disco and live bands in the evenings. It was a mini Glastonbury! The 1st Stevenage Guides have been working on the Healthy Herts challenge Tradtions and Physical challenges.
Kirstie was presented with her BP award earlier in the term, she organised the evenings activities and games for the Guides and the usual cake and fizzy drinks were enjoyed by all. In May the Guides hiked to Wymondley Wood and cooked lunch on hike fires before making emergency shelters out of tarps and ropes and ended the day with a camp fire and the usual camp fire stunts.
The Guides are looking forward to the Warwick Castle event in September.
The 15th Stevenage Rainbows have been very busy. They have taken part unit, district and division celebrations for the centenary, which were enjoyed by all.
Centenary celebrations were started with a great evening with the Brownies and Guides, the girls had many activities they could take part in as well as a climbing wall. Like all guiding events the BBQ and celebration cake was eaten!
As a unit they have taken the challenge of the adventure 100, where they ate ice cream with different toppings, went for walks and had a lot of fun to achieve 100 points, as well as taking part and completing the Hertfordshire centenary walking challenge.
It's been a great year, lets hope the next 100 years are just as good!
